Kids Play Sofa Guide UK (2026): Sizes, Fabrics and Prices
Share
Quick answer: A kids' play sofa is a set of foam pieces with removable covers that children can rebuild into a sofa, fort, slide, bed or den. For a UK home, look for 6 to 14 pieces, a cover you can wash, and a footprint of about 120cm when laid out as a sofa. Expect to pay roughly £155 to £475 depending on the number of pieces and the fabric.
Play sofas have become one of the most popular things we sell at Soft Play Market, especially in the run-up to Christmas. They're part furniture, part toy: a proper seat for stories and films, and a box of giant building blocks the rest of the time. This guide explains how they differ, what's worth paying for, and how to pick the right one for your space and your child.
What is a kids' play sofa?
A kids' play sofa (sometimes called a play couch or modular foam sofa) is a child-sized sofa made from separate foam blocks. Each block has its own zipped cover. Put together, it's a sofa. Pulled apart, the pieces become whatever your child wants: a tent, a tunnel, a slide off the base, a stage, a car or a floor bed for a sleepover.
Because the pieces are light foam, toddlers can move and rebuild them on their own, which is a big part of the appeal. It's the kind of toy that gets played with differently every day.
How many pieces does a play sofa need?
More pieces means more shapes, but also more space. As a rough guide from the ranges we stock:
| Pieces | Example | Best for | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3–4 piece sets | Velinda seating sets: chair, sofa and fold-out lounger | A reading corner, siblings who want a seat each | £336–£375 |
| 6 pieces | MeowBaby Pocket Sofa Basic | Small rooms, toddlers, simple forts | £255–£352 |
| 10 pieces | Velinda modular convertible sofa | Sofa by day, mattress for sleepovers | £311 |
| 12 pieces | MeowBaby Pocket Sofa Plus | Bigger forts and obstacle courses | £313–£407 |
| 14 pieces | MeowBaby Pocket Sofa Max | Playrooms, two children, a full floor bed | £368–£463 |
Prices are our current UK prices and include free delivery. If you're unsure, 6 to 10 pieces is the sweet spot for one child in a living room.
How much space does a play sofa take up?
Built as a sofa, most children's play sofas are around 120cm wide and 50 to 60cm deep, roughly the size of a small armchair and footstool. Laid flat as a floor bed, plan for about 120 × 150cm or more for the larger sets. Measure the spot you have in mind before ordering, and remember your child will spread the pieces across the room the moment it arrives.
Which fabric is best for a kids' sofa?
- Corduroy: soft, hides marks well, and has the ribbed look that suits most living rooms. Our most popular finish.
- Slimcord: a finer corduroy with a smoother feel.
- Bouclé: the textured "teddy" fabric. Looks beautiful in neutral rooms but shows dirt more quickly in white.
- Velvet and eco-leather: velvet is soft and rich in colour, eco-leather wipes clean, which is handy for nurseries and messy toddlers.
Whatever the fabric, check the covers come off. Velinda's covers, for example, unzip and wash at 30°C. With toddlers, snacks and felt-tip pens, removable covers aren't optional.
What age is a play sofa suitable for?
Children can use a play sofa as a seat as soon as they're sitting and crawling, and climbing on the low foam pieces is good practice for new walkers. The building and den-making really takes off from around 2 years, and most children keep using them until 7 or 8 as a reading spot, a sleepover bed or a cosy corner for games. As with any climbing play, stay close with younger toddlers and keep the sofa away from windows and hard furniture edges.
Is a play sofa worth the money?
It's not a cheap toy, so it's worth thinking about how it'll be used. A play sofa earns its price when it replaces several things: a children's armchair, a set of soft play blocks, a floor bed for sleepovers and a den. It also tends to last, because foam pieces don't break the way plastic toys do, and covers can be washed or replaced. If you only need a seat for your child, a single foam chair or sofa from about £155 is the more sensible buy.
How do you clean a kids' play sofa?
Unzip the covers and wash them on a gentle 30°C cycle (check the label first), then let them air dry rather than tumble drying. Wipe the foam with a damp cloth if anything soaked through, and let it dry completely before putting the covers back on. For quick spills on corduroy, blot rather than rub.
Frequently asked questions
Can a play sofa be used as a bed?
Yes, most modular play sofas lay flat as a floor bed, which is great for sleepovers and naps. The 10 and 14 piece sets make the biggest bed.
Do play sofas come in one box?
Usually yes. The foam pieces arrive packed, and there's nothing to assemble: unwrap them, let them settle into shape for a few hours, and they're ready.
Is a play sofa a good Christmas present?
It's one of the most popular Christmas presents for toddlers we sell, because it's a toy and a piece of furniture in one. Order early in December so it arrives in time.
Can you add a ball pit to a play sofa?
Some modular sets can be arranged into a low square to hold balls. For a proper ball pit, a dedicated foam pit works better. Take a look at our ball pits.
